As one of the founding institutions of Incheon Global Campus (IGS), the University of Utah Asia Campus opened, serving as an international branch campus in Songdo, Incheon, South Korea. Our BMI faculty members visited The University of Utah Asian Campus to attend the annual conference of Bioinformatics and Systems Biology held in the IGS from August 16-18, 2016. Our five faculty members were invited to Bioinfo 2016 to present their research on the topic of “The importance of deep and precision phenotyping for the precision medicine initiative”. The session started with an introduction from Dr. Facelli, the session chair, followed by a talk by Dr. Lee on “Translating knowledge from alternative splicing gene regulation in precision medicine”. Dr. Bray spoke about “Clinical phenotyping for personalized medicine using standard terminologies”. Dr. Garvin presented her recent work on “Automating heart failure phenotyping with natural language processing for personalized medicine”. Dr. Conway presented his research on “Using social media to identify and study health behavior at the sub-population”. Moreover, Dr. Facelli gave a wonderful keynote speech on “Uncertainty Quantification for Biomedical Decision Making: A Critical Informatics Contribution to Precision Medicine Initiatives”.
