Rich History

Formed in 1964, we were the first biomedical informatics department in the U.S., and we continue to be recognized as an exceptional, comprehensive training program.

National Leadership

Our faculty are nationally recognized, holding many prestigious awards and honors. A precedent set by University of Utah's own Homer Warner, our faculty continue with the tradition to be pioneers in the field of biomedical informatics. 

Hands-on Activities

 A variety of practica provide students with proctored hands-on activities in research labs, hospital operations, and industry, such as build a FHIR-enabled app to interoperable across EHRs, work on a clinical research team applying NLP to clinical text, design and evaluate dashboards for clinical applications, and work on a project with one of our Industry Advisory Board partners.

Abundant Student Opportunities

The unique breadth and depth of opportunities for students in the department build on the strength in our diverse research areas. Student research is supported by federally funded individual investigator and center grants, 24 primary and 50 adjunct faculty who are international leaders in their areas and special interest groups for students, faculty, and industry partners with similar interests.

Real-World Opportunities

Ours is a community rich in informatics innovation and application. Our faculty and students address problems in the delivery of health care and the enhancement of health with multiple real-world partner laboratories.
