The Department of Biomedical Informatics has a number of post-doctoral research fellowships available. Currently, we have open positions in the T32 and T15 training grants, as well as openings in the ReImagineEHR group (under the leadership of Drs. Del Fiol and Kawamoto) and the research groups of Drs. Facelli and Lussier. 


Post-doctoral Fellowship in the Facelli Research Group 

The Department of Biomedical Informatics (Facelli research group, https://home.chpc.utah.edu/~u0033399/)  is seeking post-doctoral research fellows with expertise in advanced machine learning, graphical methods and computational modeling to work in translational science and exposure health domains. She/He will work with the faculty in the group and with the engineering staff of the Utah Clinical and Translational Science Institute (https://ctsi.utah.edu) and the Center for Excellence in Exposure Health Informatics (http://ceehi.ccts.utah.edu/). These projects will use machine learning methods to understand the effects of mediated interventions, graphical methods to describe rare disease phenotypes, and computational modeling for developing exposure records.

Job Requirements

  • A Completed Doctoral degree in a related field, e.g. Computer Science, Biomedical Informatics, Computational Sciences, etc.
  • Good English skills (writing, speaking).
  • Ability to work independently, and within teams.
  • Experience with standard engineering and coding practices for developing large scientific computing software. 

This is a one-year appointment with the expectations of annual renewals upon satisfactory performance and funding availability.


Mentored Postdoctoral Fellowships in Clinical Informatics

The Department of Biomedical Informatics at the University of Utah is recruiting to build on existing strengths and nurture post-doctoral fellows toward successful research careers, including as tenure-track faculty members at the University of Utah. We are seeking multiple outstanding applicants for our Mentored Postdoctoral Fellowships in Clinical Informatics. The main goals of these fellowships are to enable Postdoctoral Fellows to start developing an independent research career. The Fellowship is an excellent opportunity to potentially transition into a tenure-track faculty position in our Department. Areas of special interest include clinical informatics, clinical decision support, precision medicine, population health, health equity, and standards-based interoperability. Much of this work is conducted under the umbrella of the University of Utah ReImagine EHR initiative (https://reimagineehr.utah.edu/), which is a nation-leading program on optimizing patient care and the provider experience through interoperable digital health innovations. The program is supported in part by over $35 million in grant funding from agencies including NIH, AHRQ, CMS, PCORI, and CDC (https://reimagineehr.utah.edu/research/). 

Candidates will have opportunities to develop into an independent research scientist by engaging as a valuable member of a network of scientists from multiple scientific domains. Through the interview process, we will identify potential projects in collaboration with the candidate. The primary mentor will be Dr. Guilherme Del Fiol (Vice Chair for Research and Research Director of ReImagine EHR) and/or Dr. Kensaku Kawamoto (Vice Chair for Clinical Informatics and Director of ReImagine EHR). In general, candidates will both contribute to existing projects and carve out their own research foci in preparation of an independent research career. Candidates will also be offered opportunities such as leading and collaborating on manuscripts, participating in the development of grant proposals, teaching, participating in professional development opportunities, and gaining relevant informatics skills through hands-on engagement in cutting-edge research projects.

Energetic, self-directed individuals with a promising early record of achievement in research, teaching, and the design, implementation, and/or evaluation of healthcare technologies are encouraged to apply.  A Ph.D. or post-clinical training in informatics is preferred. Successful candidates will enjoy a stimulating and supportive research environment. The Department of Biomedical Informatics traditionally hosts collaborations that span multiple institutions and entities including the University of Utah Health Sciences Center, the Huntsman Cancer Institute, the Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Intermountain Healthcare, the Utah Department of Health, and Federally Qualified Health Centers in a multi-state region.

The Department of Biomedical Informatics is one of the most mature informatics programs in the United States offering postdoctoral training, PhD and Master of Science degrees, and a graduate certificate program. The faculty, fellows, and staff at the Department have been national leaders in applied clinical informatics and clinical decision support for over four decades.
