Equity, Diversity, & Inclusion

The Department of Biomedical Informatics at the University of Utah is working actively to create a diverse and inclusive environment for trainees, staff, and faculty.

Equity, Diversity, Inclusion (EDI) Efforts

  • Requirement of bias training for all search committee members before the commencement of the activity

  • Microaggression training for all trainees, staff, and faculty (initiated Spring 2020)

  • Presence at Society for the Advancement of Chicanos/Hispanics and Native Americans in Science (SACNAS) annual meeting for the recruitment of a diverse student body

  • Commitment to recruiting diverse speakers for all DBMI events - Grand Rounds, Business Seminar, Industry Advisory Board talks

  • Promotion of campus resources to all trainees, staff, and faculty on assistance with sensitive issues and conflicts

EDI COMMITTEE

In Spring 2021, the Office of Health Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (OHEDI) in the School of Medicine brought together departmental leadership with the goal of creating a diversity council to build community, coordinate efforts, share best practices and resources, and assist with the implementation of diversity plans across the school. Melissa Ilardo and Rebecca Manning are serving as DBMI’s representatives on this committee. In an effort to bring EDI to the forefront of DBMI's core missions, we have established our own committee to develop departmental best practices around EDI, assist with the implementation of departmental diversity goals, and create a more equitable and inclusive workplace, aligned with the strategic initiatives and missions of DBMI and the University.
